Quakers vs. Puritans

The story of the Quakers’ in North America always centers on their relationship to their nemesis: the Puritans. The Puritans were another religious group that formed around the same time. In fact, the stories of the Quakers and the Puritans are pretty similar—both developed out of opposition to the Church of England, both fled to the Netherlands to escape persecution, both eventually came to Massachusetts Bay to find a new life. Despite their similarities their relationship was at the best times tense and ended in persecution and violence.
